Call-to-Action Design: Creating Buttons and CTAs That Get Clicked

7 min read

CTA Design: The Most Important Element on the Page

The call-to-action button is where design intent meets user behaviour. Every other element on a conversion page exists to prepare the user to click that button. Optimising CTAs has an outsized impact on conversion rates — small changes here produce large results. Design Agency applies conversion design principles to every landing page and website project.

Visual CTA Design

Contrast: The CTA button must stand out from surrounding elements. If your page background is light, a dark or brightly coloured button stands out. If your brand is blue, consider an orange CTA — it contrasts both with the background and the brand colour.

Size: Large enough to be impossible to miss, not so large it becomes overwhelming. On mobile, minimum 44x44px touch target.

Shape: Rounded corners are currently dominant and feel friendly and approachable. Sharp corners feel more formal. Pill shapes (fully rounded) stand out from rectangular elements.

Whitespace around the button: Isolating the button with whitespace draws attention to it. A CTA buried among other elements loses impact.

CTA Copy Principles

Be specific: "Download the Free Guide" beats "Submit". "Start My Free Trial" beats "Sign Up". Specificity communicates what happens next and sets expectations.

First person: "Get My Free Report" consistently outperforms "Get Your Free Report". Users respond to ownership language.

Action-oriented: Start with a verb: Get, Start, Download, Join, Try, Book, Discover.

Benefit, not action: "Save 30% Today" (benefit) vs. "Apply Discount" (action). Benefit-led CTAs outperform action-led in most contexts.

CTA Placement

  • Above the fold — At least one CTA visible without scrolling
  • After the pitch — Once you've stated the value, offer the action
  • At the end of content — For long-form pages and articles
  • Repeated — Multiple CTAs on long pages (users read differently)

Design Agency Group designs conversion systems — not just aesthetically pleasing pages, but sequenced design that logically guides visitors from interest to action.
