From Print to Digital: Translating Brand Identity Across Media

Print to Digital: The Translation Challenge

A brand identity developed for print — business cards, letterheads, brochures — faces a set of entirely different constraints when translated to digital screens. Colours look different on screen, minimum size requirements change, and interactive contexts require additional design thinking. Design Agency creates brand identities built for both print and digital from the outset.

Colour Adaptation: CMYK vs. RGB vs. HSL

Print colours are specified in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). Screen colours are specified in RGB (Red, Green, Blue) or HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness). These colour spaces have different gamuts — the range of colours they can reproduce.

Some CMYK colours — especially highly saturated ones — look muted when converted to RGB because RGB can display a wider range of saturation. Some vibrant RGB colours can't be replicated in CMYK at all.

For cross-media brand systems:

  • Define a primary Pantone colour (the reference standard)
  • Derive CMYK values for print
  • Match RGB and HEX values for screen as closely as possible
  • Accept that perfect matching may not be achievable — define the closest acceptable screen equivalent

Logo Adaptation for Digital

SVG versions: Logos used on screen should be SVG wherever possible — infinitely sharp at any size, tiny file size.

Favicons: A favicon is typically 16–32px — far too small for a detailed logo. Design a simplified icon version that works at this tiny scale.

Dark background versions: Digital contexts frequently have dark backgrounds. Ensure you have a version of the logo designed for dark backgrounds, not just inverted from the light version.

Animation-ready thinking: Digital logos can animate — a letter, a shape element, or the entire mark can have an entrance animation. Consider this when designing the original mark.

Typography Mapping

Print typefaces are not always available as web fonts. Map print fonts to web equivalents:

  • Exact match if the typeface is available on Google Fonts or as a licensed web font
  • Close visual equivalent if the exact typeface is print-only

Design Agency Group works across both print and digital outputs for clients — creating brand systems that translate precisely from a business card to a website to a social media profile.
