Progressive Web Apps: The Bridge Between Web and Native

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a website that behaves like a native app. Users can install it on their home screen, receive push notifications, access it offline, and experience native-level performance — all through the browser, without an app store. Design Agency builds PWAs for clients wanting native app reach without app store friction.

What Makes a Web App "Progressive"

PWAs are built on three foundational technologies:

Service Workers: JavaScript files that run in the background, separate from the main browser thread. They enable offline functionality by caching assets and API responses, and power push notifications.

Web App Manifest: A JSON file that tells the browser how the app should behave when installed — app name, icons, theme colour, display mode (fullscreen, standalone, browser), and start URL.

HTTPS: Service workers require HTTPS. This is a security requirement for all PWA functionality.

PWA Capabilities in 2026

The gap between web and native has narrowed dramatically:

  • Offline access — Cached content available without internet
  • Push notifications — Re-engage users like a native app
  • Home screen installation — Add to home screen prompt
  • Background sync — Queue actions while offline, sync when connected
  • File system access — Read and write local files (with permission)
  • Camera and biometric — Access device hardware

Designing for PWA Installation

The install moment is critical:

  • Show the install prompt at a moment of high engagement
  • Explain the value of installing ("Access offline, receive updates")
  • Don't show the prompt on first visit
  • Design the install confirmation experience as part of onboarding

Caching Strategies

Different content needs different cache strategies:

  • Cache first — Static assets (CSS, JS, icons) — serve from cache, update in background
  • Network first — API data — try network, fall back to cache
  • Stale while revalidate — Serve cache immediately, update from network in background

Optumio provides hosting infrastructure optimised for PWA performance — HTTPS, CDN, and caching configurations that maximise PWA scores. Design Agency Group has experience building communication applications, demonstrating their capability with complex web app interfaces.
