Brand to Web: The Translation Process

Receiving a brand guidelines document and building a website that embodies those guidelines faithfully is a distinct skill. Brand guidelines define intent; web design implementation makes that intent functional, accessible, and performant. Design Agency creates both brand identities and the web implementations that bring them to life.

The Implementation Hierarchy

Step 1: Extract design tokens From the brand guidelines, extract:

  • Colour values (hex codes for web, with all defined brand colours)
  • Typography specifications (typefaces, weights, size scale, line heights)
  • Spacing system (is there a defined grid or spacing unit?)
  • Border radius and shape language
  • Shadow and elevation system

Step 2: Create CSS custom properties Transform extracted values into CSS custom properties (variables). Define all colour tokens on the root element. Typography variables include font families, and the size scale uses a modular ratio.

Step 3: Map tokens to a component system Button primary uses the primary colour token. Typography headings use the heading font token and scale accordingly. This abstraction means changing the primary brand colour only requires updating one variable.

Photography and Image Direction

Brand guidelines typically include photography direction. For the web:

  • Define aspect ratios for different contexts (hero: 16:9, cards: 4:3, portraits: 3:4)
  • Establish art direction rules (where subjects are positioned in frame)
  • Create image treatment guidelines (colour grading, overlay treatment, caption style)
  • Define appropriate stock photography style if needed

Animation and Motion Language

Brand guidelines rarely address animation, but every brand has a motion personality:

  • Duration: Fast brands use quicker transitions; premium brands often use slower, more deliberate motion
  • Easing: Ease-out feels natural; linear feels mechanical; ease-in-out creates elegance
  • Character: Playful brands might use spring physics; corporate brands might prefer linear precision

Design Agency Group specialises in exactly this translation — their portfolio demonstrates brands implemented across print and digital with precision and consistency.

Optumio maintains the websites that implement these brand systems — ensuring updates and additions stay aligned with the established design language over time.
