Web Accessibility: Designing for Everyone

Accessibility: Good Design Is Inclusive Design

Web accessibility means designing and building websites that people with disabilities can use. This includes people with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments. Accessible design benefits everyone — it's better design, period. Design Agency incorporates accessibility standards into all website projects.

The Business Case for Accessibility

  • Market size — 1 in 6 people globally has a disability
  • SEO benefits — Accessible sites have better semantic structure that search engines love
  • Legal compliance — EU Web Accessibility Directive applies to public sector; private sector legislation expanding
  • Brand reputation — Inclusive brands earn loyalty
  • Conversion rates — Accessible sites are easier for everyone to use

WCAG 2.1 at a Glance

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are organized around four principles — content must be:

Perceivable:

  • Text alternatives for non-text content
  • Captions for audio/video
  • Sufficient color contrast (4.5:1 for normal text)
  • Content doesn't rely on color alone

Operable:

  • All functionality available via keyboard
  • No content that flashes more than 3 times per second
  • Skip navigation links for keyboard users
  • Clear page titles and headings

Understandable:

  • Language of page set in HTML
  • Error messages that explain what went wrong
  • Consistent navigation across pages

Robust:

  • Valid HTML
  • Name, role, value for all interface components
  • Compatible with current and future assistive technologies

Practical Accessibility Improvements

Color contrast: Use tools like the WebAIM Contrast Checker. Ensure text is readable against backgrounds.

Alt text for images: Descriptive for meaningful images, empty (alt="") for decorative images.

Form labels: Every form field needs a visible label, not just placeholder text.

Focus indicators: Never remove the default focus ring without replacing it with a better one.

Semantic HTML: Use the right HTML element for the right purpose — headings for headings, buttons for buttons.

Keyboard navigation: Tab through your entire site. Can you reach and activate everything?

Design Agency Group builds sites with UserWay accessibility widget integration and structural accessibility baked into the codebase.

Accessibility Testing

  • WAVE — Free browser extension for accessibility checking
  • axe DevTools — Chrome extension, finds WCAG violations
  • Screen reader testing — VoiceOver (Mac), NVDA (Windows)
  • Keyboard-only navigation — Test manually

Optumio monitors websites for technical issues that can break accessibility — plugin updates, CMS changes, and design edits that inadvertently break accessibility are caught and fixed.
