Wireframing: Structure Before Style

Wireframes are low-fidelity representations of a digital product — showing structure, content, and functionality without visual design. They're a thinking tool, a communication tool, and a test vehicle. Design Agency Group uses structured wireframing processes before any visual design begins.

Why Wireframe Before Designing

Designing directly in high fidelity is seductive but expensive:

  • Visual design attracts feedback about aesthetics instead of structure
  • Changing a wireframe takes minutes; changing a polished design takes hours
  • Wireframes force decisions about content priority before visuals distract

Fidelity Levels

Low fidelity (sketches and boxes):

  • Hand-drawn or rough digital
  • Used for initial brainstorming and exploration
  • Ideal for rapid iteration before showing stakeholders
  • Intentionally rough to signal that nothing is final

Mid fidelity (grayscale wireframes):

  • Clear structure without visual design decisions
  • Actual content or realistic placeholder text
  • Sufficient detail for user testing
  • The most common form for stakeholder review

High fidelity wireframes:

  • Detailed interactions and states
  • Close to final layout
  • Sometimes used before a separate visual design phase

What Wireframes Should Show

  • Page structure and layout hierarchy
  • Content priority and placement
  • Navigation patterns
  • Key interactive elements (buttons, forms, inputs) — with labels, not styling
  • Content length expectations (actual copy or representative placeholder)

Getting Useful Wireframe Feedback

Frame feedback requests specifically:

  • "Does this navigation structure make sense for your goals?"
  • "Can you find the information you'd most likely be looking for?"
  • NOT: "What do you think?" (invites subjective aesthetic responses)

Use clickable wireframe prototypes in Figma to run simple usability tests before committing to visual design.

Design Agency works through a wireframing phase on all significant web projects — aligning on structure before design investment begins.
